Just Gimme Some Truth (with Poll!)

Ok, time for a rant.

I'm sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics

From the mailbag:

Focus on the Family, 04/13/05

The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) today filed
a lawsuit in state court challenging Illinois Gov. Rod
Blagojevich over the pro-abortion Democrat's recent
executive order forcing all pharmacists to dispense
medication that may violate their consciences and
religious beliefs.

(more below the fold)

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich issued an emergency
executive order today requiring all state pharmacists to
fill prescriptions for the so-called "morning-after pill,"
the Washington Post reported.

Life News.com, 04/08/05

Pharmacists in Illinois who have moral issues with dispensing the morning after pill may defy an order by Governor Rod Blagojevich requiring them to dispense the drugs, which sometimes cause abortions. On Friday, he issued an emergency executive order requiring all state pharmacists to fill prescriptions for such drugs.

Baptist Press, 04/08/05

The governor issued an emergency order that forces all pharmacies to fill prescriptions for the morning after pill. While the order is good only for 150 days, the governor is seeking to make it permanent.

Family Research Council, 04/06/05

Last Friday, Gov. Blagojevich issued an emergency rule requiring pharmacies to accept and fill prescriptions for contraceptives "without delay" and established a toll-free number for state residents to report refusals. This extraordinary action was taken after a few pharmacists refused to fill prescriptions for the "morning-after pill," the potential abortifacient.

All I want is the truth

Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 04/02/05

Responding to complaints about a Chicago pharmacist who refused to dispense birth control pills, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Friday issued an executive order requiring drugstores to fill prescriptions for contraceptives.

The policy, the first of its kind in the United States, requires all pharmacies that carry contraceptives to fill prescriptions without delay. "No hassles. No lecture. Just fill the prescription," Blagojevich said.

Just gimme some truth

Ft Worth paper continues:

Blagojevich's policy does not require that all drugstores carry contraceptives; many don't, especially in Catholic hospitals. But if they have them, they must dispense them to anyone with a valid prescription or risk suspension of their license, according to Susan Hofer of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which oversees pharmacies.

Let's try the horse's mouth:

Today, Gov. Blagojevich filed an emergency rule that requires pharmacies that sell contraceptives to fill prescriptions for birth control without delay.  If the contraceptive, or a suitable alternative, is not in stock, the pharmacy must order or obtain the contraceptive or, if the patient prefers, transfer the prescription to another local pharmacy of the patient's choice or return it to the patient.

"Our regulation says that if a woman goes to a pharmacy with a prescription for birth control, the pharmacy is not allowed to discriminate who they sell it to and who they don't.  The pharmacy will be expected to accept that prescription and fill it in the same way, and in the same period of time they would fill any other prescription.  No delays.  No hassles.  No lecture.  Just fill the prescription," the Governor explained.

(ok, I don't know about neurotic or psychotic, but I am sure about pig-headed)

Denton-Record Chronicle, 04/13/05

Corte originally filed his bill [House Bill 16] to allow pharmacists to refuse emergency contraception, but changed his bill to the 'abortion procedure' language that alarmed abortion rights groups. Corte said he did not intend for pharmacists to be able to object to procedures that prevent pregnancy.

'The purpose is to give pharmacists conscientious objection if they feel there is termination of life,' he said. 'It does nothing to limit birth control. The opposition is trying to misinform and scare.'

All I want is the truth

My LTE, sent to the Houston Chronicle (just tonight):

A simple google search on 'birth control abortifacient' reveals that many
pro-life groups consider the use of ordinary oral contraceptives to result
in abortions because, according to their websites, the contraceptives create
a "hostile endometrium" and there is a possibility, however remote, that
under an oral contraceptive regime a fertilized egg would fail to implant in
the hostile endometrium.  Pharmacists for Life International's website at
http://www.pfli.org/ contains a detailed FAQ on this issue.  It is not
misinformation to repeat publicly available information.
